Waimanalo Beach

This is slightly painful for me to do, because I am getting more and more embarassed to post pregnant pictures. My face is getting puffier and my belly continues to grow at an alarming rate. But that's life, I guess I don't need to hide it from all of you!! I keep hoping the baby is almost done incubating and she'll make her grand entrance soon. Officially, I am not due until the 26th of August.
Next week I am going to work part-time, and then I'm quitting forEVER!! I am so excited to be starting my real life's work, you know, the on-call 24-hours-a-day kind. And as everyone suggested, I am trying to get as much sleep as I can, although I have to say, I can't remember the last time I had a good nights sleep...so I should be somewhat ready to get up every few hours for the babe.

Anyway, I'm getting off the subject. Today we had a marvelous times with friends at my favorite beach on the entire island, Waimanalo. Melody, our great party planner, and the friend who threw my baby shower, suggested it, and we had a great turn out. (Life is so much more fun since Todd and Mel moved back here! They are loads of fun.) She describes the beach perfectly on her blog- beautiful waters, and the softest sand around.
Samuel might not appreciate that I'm putting this picture on, but oh well! It was a good shot of how pretty the water was today. He's telling me that this board is bent, and that if I lean up on my forearms, I could try to catch a few waves. I LOVE boogie boarding, so I couldn't resist, and I was mostly able to do it, at least for a few minutes, without leaning on The Belly. The baby rewarded me with some hiccups afterwards.
Mark and Rob sculpted a nice shark out of sand, they even used grapes for eyes. This was especially fitting since a few weeks ago, a tourist survived a shark bite.
Sharks are really rare around Oahu, don't be shy, we still want you to come visit! Still though...I get scared every time Samuel goes surfing.

Here's a group shot by the shark, but we were a little late, lots of people had already gone home.Nice background huh? We really do feel blessed to live in such a beautiful place. It's like the Primary song "My Heavenly Father Loves Me"--being played around us all the time. :)

University of Phoenix Baby Shower

Well, my husband has to have the greatest co-workers on the planet. I can't say he always enjoys his job (he is a finance counselor) but he is surrounded by really great people there. They formed a city-league softball team and we played on the team, even though we pretty much never won. I stopped at around 6 or 7 months prego, because no matter how fast I ran, I never made it to first base without getting thrown out. That's because at 6/7 months I ran about as fast as a turtle. A fat one.

Anyway, either they were really impressed with my softball skills, or they really love Samuel (pretty sure they really love Samuel.) His co-workers got together and planned a huge baby shower, right in the middle of the workday. Their boss let them take 2 1/2 hours out of their day to do it. (Have you ever heard of the husband's co-workers throwing a co-ed baby shower? I hadn't. HOW COOL ARE THEY?!?

I think there were about 30 of his co-workers there, although half of them left before we remembered to take a group picture, but here's some of them. I can't say enough about this shower. Samuel and I both were completely astounded at how much time and effort went into the food, the decorations, the games, and the gifts...THEY WERE SO DANG GENEROUS!!
We got TONS of diapers (our first request), a huge gift card (for more diapers) and then lots more baby stuff like washcloths, clothes, bath stuff, blankets, socks, and a darling diaper bag! I have to put a picture of it:

THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYBODY AT UOP!!! WE LOVE YOU GUYS!

You asked for it: NAMES

So, it's been kind of funny.

Once people find out you’re pregnant, they ask if it’s a boy or a girl. But as soon as you know if it’s a boy or a girl, the next question you get asked, without fail, is, “Do you have any names picked out?” I've been tempted to just make one up to satisfy them, but instead I just lamely throw out a few ideas.

We haven’t been able to find "the one" yet. Some of my very favorites turned out to be names of Samuel's ex-girlfriends, so they're out! And some of Samuel's favorites are just too...old fashioned for me, I'm liking the modern twist!

Also, because this might be our only baby born in Hawaii, we thought we could throw in a little something Hawaiian. Kalia is Hawaiian for "beautiful". Samuel likes it a lot, I like it a little, although I do like Lia better. (Of course we could name her Kalia and call her Lia...we're considering it.)

We went through some lists and came up with names that we are open to. I can’t promise that we’ll name her anything from this list, but here it is:

Alexis/Lexi
Gabrielle/Gabriella
Rebekah
Ashley
Kelsey
Kalia
Lia
Jenna
McKenzie
Sadie
Victoria/Tori
Rachel

I'm pretty sure she'll have a middle name too, but we won't pick it out til we get a first name.

35 Weeks and Counting

Showing some skin this time! Woo! Some (mean) people ask me if I'm already due. Other (extremely kind) people tell me I look so small, they can't believe I only have 5 weeks left. Bless their souls. I look back at the picture I posted of 20 weeks where I called myself "huge"-- haha! What a joke! Huge is just setting in.

A Tribute to my Dad

Well, I wasn't thinking straight. July 10, 2007 was my dad's birthday. I know he knows I have a blog, but would he stop in to read it? Probably not. Still, I should have written about him anyway. He's like the best man I know, and I tried to choose a husband as much like him as possible. :)

Krystal has a private blog, but I didn't want you to miss out on her awesome entry. She said I could post it here. Krystal and I are only 13 months apart, so we have a lot of the same memories.

Here ya go:
My Dad
Yesterday was my dad's birthday and I wanted to write up a little tribute for him. Happy Birthday Dad!

You may have heard me say (or read where I have written) that my personality is the complete opposite of my mom's, and that is true. So I guess it goes without saying that I am much more like my dad.

One of my favorite memories of my childhood is reading with my dad. He would come into our rooms at night and read books to us, skimming parts he thought would be too boring. Over and over we would chant, "don't stop!," sure that we would be able to understand every word out of his mouth. We read many books this way, but none stand out in my mind more than Summer of the Monkeys. It instantly became one of our favorite books, probably because it was already one of my dad's favorites. I remember him getting choked up at the end, when the brother decides to use the monkey money to get his sister's leg fixed, and all I could think was this has got to be the best story ever written!

I am sure that my love of reading can be traced back to those nights we spent together, and I can think of nothing else I would like for my own children than to have some of their grandpa's passion for books trickle down to them. I also blame/attribute my love of sports to him, as he was (and still is) an amazing athlete.

My dad was (and I hope still is) one of my biggest fans. While my mom didn't know what a pick and roll was (still doesn't in fact, although my sister and I have tried to teach her), my dad always knew more than my basketball coach (especially if you ask him). And for being such a mild-mannered man, his voice always carried louder than anyone else in the stands. I have two vivid memories of him from this time in my life. One was after a particularly disappointing game , when I came home feeling completely dissatisfied with my performance. My mom greeted me at the door with, "what happened?," genuinely spoken in love, but NOT what I wanted to hear. After brushing her off, hoping she would get the message that I wasn't in the mood to discuss it, I found my dad in the kitchen, making french fries. Maybe it's because I'm a lot like him, but he seemed to instantly realize how I was feeling and what I needed. He looked at me for a moment, and asked, "You hungry?" I nodded, and he lowered some sliced potatoes into the hot grease. He didn't say any more, but somehow that was exactly what I needed. Those fries may not have been magic fries, but they must have been pretty special, since I remember them ten years later.

I also remember my dad and Ross, the father of another girl on our team, at the state basketball tournament. Unlike most of the parents, they weren't satisfied sitting a respectable distance away, but chose to sit right in the middle of the student section. I remember looking up at them during the boys game (which, unfortunately, always seems to draw a much larger crowd than any game I ever played in), and being amazed at what I saw. Not only were they surrounded by dozens of students from the other school, who were taunting them relentlessly, they were standing up, yelling right back at them and pointing at the scoreboard. I got the feeling that somehow they had been transported back to their own "glory days," which we were always being reminded of, and I just shook my head, hoping that they would make it out of there without inciting a riot.

There are so many other things I could tell you about him, but I think this picture says it better than I could hope to. He loves his grandkids, maybe more so than his own children even, and I can't think of any place more inviting to fall asleep than on grandpa's lap in the middle of a crowded mall at Christmas time. Especially if he was looking at me with such love in his eyes. Yep, Allie is one lucky girl. And so am I. I love you dad!

She's a good writer, isn't she. Let me just second what she wrote about reading books, the Summer of the Monkeys (one of my favorite memories) and also, my dad's louder side, the one that showed up at athletic events. He sure passed on his competetive genes to us!

One of my favorite "dad" memories was the night I missed the game winning shot at the state basketball tournament my junior year (okay, bad basketball memory, good dad memory.) That was it for Krystal, the end of her senior year, and somehow I had ended up with the last shot. I just remember my dad coming out of the stands, putting one arm around each of us and we cried into his shirt. He didn't need to say anything. That's kind of his way- less words are sometimes better.

Let me add that I have always been proud to have him as a father. Now that I'm older I look back and realize how incredibly blessed we were to have a dad who faithfully gave us weekly family home evening lessons, even if we fell asleep through a lot of them (during basketball season, we were just so worn out!) He is a spiritual giant, and he knows more about the Gospel than almost anyone I know. Thank you dad, for all you have done, and continue to do for our family. This hardly seems adequate, but I hope you get to read it. I love you too, more than words can say.

A Healthy Snack

Hee hee, so here's my victorious story of the day!! I went shopping Saturday and hit up some major outlets about 20 minutes outside of Honolulu. I found a MONSTER sale at the Children's Place outlet, and I couldn't turn it down. I guess I should tell you, to me, getting a good deal is like the BEST thing ever for me. I don't think I pay full price for ANYTHING, I just can't do it. Well, shopping makes you hungry, and actually, I was STARVING. And I walked right by...ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHOCOLATE FACTORY. (I can't believe they have one out here!! Yay!) I'd been there once before and we'd splurged and bought something called Avalanche Bark, cause it was half off. It was soooo good, and once I saw it, my mouth watered and I had to have it...you know the drill. There was no price anywhere around, but I figured I would treat myself, and I asked for a hunk of Bark. She rang me up...and the cost was...

$8.31!!! For one hunk of Bark!!

I stared in disbelief. I just couldn't do it. No way. That's almost as much as a whole Papa John's pizza, which was just 20 minutes away. So I told the lady I didn't have enough money, then she quickly told me they take credit card!! So I cleared that up and said I didn't WANT to pay that much money, and out I went, my mouth watering the whole way. I was so bummed, but I just tried to keep my thoughts focused on pizza (which I went home and ordered). I went and told Samuel how strong I had been to not buy it, then I realized, Hey, google is like my best friend, I AM GOING TO FIND THAT RECIPE AND MAKE MY OWN AVALANCHE BARK! I refused to be ripped off.

Well, I found that recipe all right!! I made it last night and it was seriously like IDENTICAL to what we remembered having before. I am sharing it with you so you can make yourself a treat for a GREAT deal and NOT get ripped off. (It probably costs $4.00 to make the WHOLE batch. Maybe less.)

Oh, by the way, I used Cocoa Krispies (instead of Rice Krispies) and my white chocolate chips had macadamia nuts mixed in, cause that's what I had on hand. Couldn't even tell. YUM YUM YUM YUM, enjoy everybody.

P.S. I was joking about the "healthy" part. Well, there is peanut butter in it, a "good" fat!! :)

Avalanche Bark from Rocky Mtn. Chocolate Factory
Serves/Makes:2 4"x4" hunks

Ingredients
1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
1-3/4 cups white chocolate chips
1 cup Rice Crispies cereal
1/2 cup (slightly packed) mini marshmallows
1/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (frozen)

Preparation
In double boiler (or metal bowl over a sauce pan filled 1/4 about full of water) over medium-high heat, add
white chocolate chips and peanut butter. Constantly stir with wire wisk until completely melted. Remove from heat (and remove off bottom boiling water). Set aside and let cool for about 5 minutes
Transfer mixture to a mixing bowl. Fold in all of the rice crispies. Let cool till it barely feels warm (if you add the marshmallows and semi-sweet chocolate chips when it's too warm, they will melt and that's not what you want). It will take a while to cool, but do not cool it down in the refridgerator or it will set up.
While you wait, line a 4"x8.5" loaf pan with plastic wrap. You may even want to lightly spray the plastic with cooking spray first for easier removal. When the mixture is cooled, fold in marshmallows first then the semi-sweet chips (just fold to distribute, don't over work the mixture).
Pour the mixture into the prepared pan, fold the excess plastic wrap over top and gently press the mixture so it's even in the pan. The harder you press, the denser the bark will be.
Put it in the fridge to set it up. It will take about 20 to 30 minutes to completely set up.
When set, remove from pan and cut into desired size pieces.
Note:
If you are a real fan of peanut butter, add extra. It is however very overpowering, so be careful. I tried this out a few times and this came so close to the real thing I couldn't tell the difference! I had both in front of me at the same time. (these comments are from Kathleen, the one who posted the recipe. Thanks Kathleen, whoever you are!

Happy 4th of July

Happy 4th of July everybody!! I am so grateful to live in this wonderful "land of the free and (the) home of the brave." We got a cool opportunity this year. Our friend Jon is in medical school, he's in the military, and the 4th of July was his last day in Hawaii. He has three years of residency left, and he's spending it in Germany! Cool! Anyway, because he has military privileges, he got us into the 4th of July celebration at Pearl Harbor. (I have to admit, sheepishly, that I've lived in Hawaii for 2 years and never done the Pearl Harbor tour!!) Well, we'd heard a rumor that you can tour some of the huge ships and destroyers, if you know who to ask. We were able to tour this amazing vessle, it's called the USS Reuben James. We were the only people touring it, so I don't think anyone else knew about it.

This is a picture of us on the top deck. They were flying all the flags kind of as decoration, for the 4th of July.

Okay, this was the CRAZIEST part, they took us up to place where the captain steers the ship. Can you BELIEVE they steer this gigantic ship with this TINY wheel? We thought it was a joke. It's not!! They said the REALLY huge destroyer ships have bigger helms (is that the right word?) but this tiny thing is how you steer. Finally, I caught this picture of the flag at sunset. Kind of a patriotic moment. Touring that ship really made me think about war, and the people who have dedicated their lives to protecting us and defending our freedom. Then, all those beautiful fireworks were even more meaningful.
I hope everyone else had a wonderful holiday.

As a Man Thinketh...

Okay, are you ready for the longest post ever? Seriously. Get comfortable. I apologize that there are very few pictures to entertain you. Let me begin by saying I got some bad news last week. Maybe you could call it a very painful confirmation of what I was dreading.

My mom is not coming out here to help me when I have my baby. She’s not coming to visit at all. It wouldn't hurt quite so bad if she hadn't just gotten back from Florida, where she spent two weeks helping my older sister with her new baby girl. I have no hard feelings toward Krystal at all, but I guess the little girl in me wants to say, "That's not fair!!" (And then I hear my mom say, "Life isn't fair.")

When I got married without her, it hurt her to the core. That was the last thing I wanted, and I had no idea it would hurt her so much, but it happened and I have been unable to fix it thus far. Well, besides that, my mom likes to have her family close, and she really hates it that I live so far away. I guess this is how she is protesting. After she confirmed that she wasn’t coming (I kept thinking/hoping she'd come around) as you can imagine, I experienced some overwhelming and fresh emotions. I was devastated, shocked, hurt, and scared; I was also amazed that my mom, an amazing woman in so many ways, would hold her grudge, even at such an important time in my life. And with all these emotions and thoughts running through me, surprise surprise, I got sooooo sick. Sore throat led to sinusitis, then the infection moved down into my chest, and I felt like I’d been run over by a truck. Which leads me to my next chapter. I don’t know if this is too “out there” for a lot of people, but it has seriously changed my life to a small degree, so maybe it will help you in some way.

Let me give a tiny bit of background: In high school, I was constantly getting bronchitis, and it would drag on for months, because I played sports and wouldn't take time to rest and get better. When I got into college, I stopped getting bronchitis, and started getting a LOT of sinus infections. These were even harder on my body. I was sure that by going on a mission I would be blessed and be very healthy. Actually, it turned out that I got sinus infections almost every three months, the entire 18 months. I guess I was getting other blessings to make up for it. Anyway, my body built up all kinds of resistance to antibiotics, and they stopped working for me.

One other sidenote: I had a stiff neck for several years, which I thought was due to a fender-bender accident I was in. Then, as I went through college, my back and shoulder muscles got really tight, and sometimes would just burn. My uncle, a massage therapist, would frequently try to work the knots out, but it would take hours, and all his body weight, and his elbow, to make any progress.

Fast-forward to the future, I meet Samuel. He introduced me to a theory (and a book) about the effects of our minds (and thoughts) on our health. He had read a book by Louise Hay called Heal Your Body.

The book talks about how we have the ability to heal our bodies and sicknesses by identifying the thoughts we are having that are making us sick. I found it pretty fascinating, but I didn’t know how much I really believed it, until it dawned on me that I wasn’t getting sick anymore. Every time I started to get sick, Samuel would help me identify what was bothering me, and my symptoms went away! It was a bit mind boggling. So, I bought a copy of the book. (By the way, it’s very short and it lists symptoms and the negative thoughts that bring on those sicknesses, according to this lady of course.)

Well, my health was getting better, but my back and shoulder pain was getting worse and really bothering me. At first I thought it was just my posture, my office job, being hunched over a computer, etc. I was looking up some books on back pain, and I stumbled upon a book with similar ideas: It’s called Healing Back Pain by Dr. John Sarno.

His theory is that back pain, even slipped discs and other things that get treated by surgery, occurs as a result of our thoughts. Well, more accurately, Dr. Sarno suggests that when we feel a lot of emotion, especially anger (or rage), rather than express it or even deal with it, our body kindly creates physical pain to distract us from our emotions. He says he has literally cured thousands of people’s back pain with this theory, without any surgery or any medicine. And an amazing part of it is, he doesn’t even make them go to psychiatrists or anything like that. He says you don’t have to RESOLVE your emotional issues, you just have to RECOGNIZE that your body is creating real physical issues to distract you from your emotions. Well, again, this was very new to me, but I became a believer when I started taking a good look at my emotional state, the anger I was feeling toward specific people in my life (okay, towards my mom). Then after MONTHS of pain, within just a few days of reading the book and telling myself it was okay to feel angry, etc, the pain in my shoulder literally melted away. I could NOT believe it. Not only that, my stiff neck that I'd had for years went away too!!

To make things even more interesting, Dr. Sarno says that if your back pain goes away, you should watch for it to re-appear at another place in the body. Sure enough, about a month after my shoulder pain went away, I woke up with a sore jaw on one side. At first I thought I’d just slept on it wrong, but it didn’t go away for several weeks. I didn’t make the connection at first, but I looked in the book, and it specifically mentioned a tight, sore jaw (and that it was especially common in women.) So, once again, I told myself that it was okay to feel angry (or, more ideally, it was okay to let the anger go, since it was only hurting myself), and the jaw pain went away within a few days.

So I was convinced…the MIND IS A POWERFUL tool, and we are just beginning to understand how much it can do for us.

Well, if you’re still reading this, I commend you, it’s almost over.

As you know, I’ve been very sick the last week. And the two weeks before that, I had developed a shooting pain in my lower back, I knew it was my sciatic nerve, and I’ve heard it’s common in pregnancy, so I figured it was something I just had to deal with.

On certain days the pain would “flare up” so bad I couldn’t walk, sit down, or even roll over in bed. I was afraid I was going to be on bed-rest. Samuel, always quicker to remember the whole mind-body connection, went to the Heal Your Body book to see what causes sciatic pain. Wouldn’t you know it, it was ‘fear of money and of the future.’ Do you think it applies? Um, YEAH! In seven weeks or less I am going to be a first-time mom, and we are going to have very little money. So, I started recognizing again, my mind was trying to distract me about my fears of the future. GREAT! (And yes, true to form, the sciatic pain was gone within about 4 days. It never ceases to amaze me.)

That's when I decided I had to share this with SOMEBODY!! What is the point you might ask? First of all, I hope everybody is aware of how their thoughts are affecting their bodies, and maybe even their kids' bodies. (I'm not sure when cognitive thoughts REALLY start processing in kids heads, but keep in mind that in adults, coughs=barking out/needing attention/needing to be seen or heard and sore throats=swallowed anger/the inability to stand up for one's self.)

Second, if you are struggling with any recurrent sickness (or pain) I highly suggest you check these books out, it's kind of like a free therapist, haha.

Last, you guys have been a great support to me throughout this pregnancy, and when I actually become a mother, I can’t tell you how nice it is to know that you guys are there to help me through it. I'll need your advice. And encouragement. That’s probably what I need the most right now. And also, a few quotes and scriptures about forgiveness, since this is going to be a big test of my character, and if I am going to be able to overcome the natural man, that totally wants to tell my mom I will never forgive her for this. But I AM going to forgive her, even if it takes all my energy to do it. Just look at what anger and negative thoughts will do to your body!!

So there's some food for thought.

And if you haven't read "As a Man Thinketh", it's a great read too, one of the best books out there.

Bye.

The 10-way Phone Call

My little brother, Eric, left the MTC this morning, and called us at 7:30 a.m. Well, actually, he called home at 7:30 (Utah) time. Cell phones are so great. He called my mom's phone, who put my dad on 3-way, who called Tara, who called Kimmy's phone, who called my phone, I called Jonny's phone, he called Krystal in Florida, who called my cousin Monique in Orem. I didn't count up everyone, but it was so cool to have our whole entire family on the phone while Eric told us goodbye (again) from the SLC airport. (Sidenote: 7:30 a.m. is 3:30 a.m. in Hawaii, but hey, we won't talk to him again until Christmas!) He is doing great, and is already in San Diego as I write this. We had him speak some Spanish to us, and we were way impressed, especially me and Samuel, who were the only ones who understood what he was saying, but it's incredible that missionaries can learn that much in 9 weeks. I'd forgotten. The gift of tongues is amazing.

In other news, I'm home sick for the second day in a row, if you didn't guess from my cartoon avatar there on the right. I got a blessing Sunday night, so I know I'm on the mend...but it's a sinus infection, and they don't go away as fast as I wish they would. Oh well. I am grateful for the extra sleep, even though I feel kinda guilty at the $$$ I'm not earning. I get paid by the hour, so I just don't get paid for days I'm not there. We're really trying to save up for when I quit. Anyway, I'm glad I have your blogs to help me get through the boring days.

Baby Shower!!

Saturday night was so fun, I just have to thank my friends for the greatest baby shower ever. It was so much fun, and I couldn't believe all the stuff they gave us for our baby girl, she is going to be STYLIN!! I haven't bought hardly any clothes (it's been hard) but we got darling things, in all sizes, and some other very needed items. I am so grateful! Here's a group picture:
So, remember I mentioned about all the young couples in our ward? These are a lot of the gals, aren't they beautiful? If you look close you'll see my red eyes. This was the end of the shower, and I had to tell them all how much I love them and how much they mean to me, and how they've been like sisters to me, offering advice and support and love, and I was pretty much bawling. Thanks to Melody, front row on the right, who headed the whole thing up. I know you can't tell, but she's 4 1/2 months pregnant (with a girl, a friend for my baby!) and has been an amazing support to me as well. She's a regular blogger too, if you want some great "discipline rules" for kids, check out her recent post here.
And here's a little glimpse of the cute clothes (and other stuff). I'm now way TOO excited to get this baby out here and try on some clothes! :)

North Shore Campfire

I don' t know if I've mentioned this, but we live about a mile away from the University of Hawaii. So, lucky for us, we have a lot of married couples in our ward who are going to school. We have had the best time with all these friends, everybody gets along so well and we get together all the time. Some of the couples have kids, and others don't, and right now we fall into both categories! About a month ago we drove to the north shore (about an hour away) and did a temple session with two other couples, the Olsons and the Moultons. Afterwards we went to a beach and had hot dogs and s'mores. The guys were so cute, doing their "hunting/gathering" thing and building the fire, roasting everything for us (I think they felt pretty good taking care of the women-folk) and we all had a blast until about midnight. (I'm enjoying these things, since staying out with friends til midnight might not be happening in the near future.) Anyway, we are grateful for good friends, it makes it so much easier to be so far away from family.

Big Island Pictures

Here's a few pictures of the Big Island. History lesson: This island is the "youngest" of all the islands, and it's the one with an active volcano that still oozes lava every day. Most of the island is covered in hardened lava (as you can see from the picture in the bottom-left.) Like all the islands, it has a "dry" side and a "rainy" side, and the rainy side is the garden-like lush land of waterfalls and tropical flowers. Now, here are some very bad pictures of me and Samuel. There's your proof that we are not very photogenic. :) This waterfall is called Akaka falls:

Then this is a picture of us looking tired after playing all day in a different waterfall, called Pe'e Pe'e falls, yes, take out the apostrophes and its Peepee falls. Anyway, they pronounce it like Peh-eh Peh-eh. We have some pictures on a waterproof camera that are getting developed.
So we ate at this Mexican restaurant, and the service was soooo bad, I started to wonder if we were on Candid camera, and they wanted to see our reactions...turns out the service was just horrible, food, not too bad.
Then we went to sleep. Comfy huh. Don't you love it when you have friends who catch you in moments like this? Yeah, that double chin is like an inch thick. Maternal fat stores?

Burn Baby Burn

Well, we really did have a great time on the Big Island, but we are paying for it now. Our last day there (Monday) we went kayaking, it was my first time, and it was really fun, we kayaked in this beautiful bay, stopped and snorkled for awhile, then kayaked some more. I put all kinds of sunblock on my arms, shoulders, and face, but I didn't put any on my legs, because I don't mind if they have some color, plus, they take longer, ya know?? Samuel only put sunblock on his face and back. Well, our friends wanted to finish sooner than we did, and drive down the road to another spot. We decided that they would drive and meet us there, and we would kayak there. We thought it was just the next bay over. We were wrong. It was like, 10 bays over, and we were in way over our heads. We just kept paddling and paddling, and still, the bay wasn't there. It was so discouraging, and we started praying for either a boat to come save us or superpower strength to keep going, or we were going to die. (That sounds dramatic, but I started to worry that we were going to get tossed by a wave and be left in the middle of the ocean to fend for ourselves. And I get tired so fast, I'd be the first to go.) Well, anyway, long story short, after about 4 hours (total) kayaking (and some superpower-strength from above), we saw the bay. I was in tears that it was there, and not 10 more bays away. Our friend took a picture of us kayaking in, (we tried to cover up as best we could, and I even had my legs covered for part of the way, but not my feet :( Do we look totally exhausted?)
For now, all we have to show for it is the most painful sunburn we've EVER had, on our legs and especially our poor feet. I wish the pictures showed how lobster red we are, but it barely captures it. Oh well. My feet are so burned that all the skin around it is swollen so that I can't flex my foot, and it feels like needles are permanently embedded in them. See?? No ankle bones!! Pudgy feet!!

We tried aloe, we tried lidocaine, we even got desperate and started spraying with vinegar every 4 hours (that actually helped the most.) It's been a miserable 24 hours. We got a laugh out of this one though, Samuel came home from work and took off his shoes and socks, and it turns out his socks are light compression socks, so they kept all the swelling out of his ankles, then the swelling ballooned out at the top of where the socks were. Talk about chicken legs huh!!! So go ahead and laugh with us and I'll post better pictures of the Big Island later.

I couldn't resist

Have you ever caught yourself thinking? I know that's a funny question, cause I know we're pretty much always thinking, if we're not talking...but today I caught myself having a funny self-conversation, which led to an important self-discovery...

I was walking home from work to have lunch, it's only about a 4 minute walk, and I had just been looking at blogs, and I saw the new baby girl that Jessica Thomas had, and I was thinking how darling the baby was, and how she has SO much hair! Then I thought about how she was born just the perfect size, not too big, not too small, which immediately led to me thinking about how big my baby is going to be, I'm pretty sure she's going to be a little bigger (they keep telling me that at my ultrasounds), so yes, that worries me a tad, that she'll be too big to squeeze out, then I think, it's because I eat so much! Then I tell myself, I don't eat THAT much, it seems like I eat about the same as before I was pregnant, with a few extra allowances here and there, (like cinnamelts), then I realized, I eat pizza from Papa Johns...just about once a week.

As SOON as the word "pizza" entered my mind, my mouth watered, and I knew I had to have it for lunch. I mean, HAD to have it. I couldn't stop thinking about it. That's when I realized I was having so many RANDOM thoughts, I had to laugh at myself, but I did think it was interesting how my thoughts had led me to pizza. I think FOOD is like, the center of my universe, everything leads back to it. Then I realized I think about food a lot, I guess that's how cravings work, as if there was a science behind it.

So, I couldn't resist, I had to put up one more ultrasound picture, this is a good shot of Baby Bigler...looking incredibly bored (can't blame her, can ya?) We just thought it was cute how she seemed to rest her head in her hand. Well, there's another post about nothing.

Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day became a very special day for me- not quite
for the reason it should be....but exactly two years ago, I came to Honolulu
to do an internship at Shriners Hospital for Children, in the Recreation Therapy department. I met Samuel at Bucca Di Beppo (an italian restaurant) only 6 days after I got on the island.
I was with another guy, whom I soon forgot about. I saw Samuel three times that week, at different activities, and he was so charming and handsome, but I just couldn't figure out why he wouldn't just ask me out when he
acted so much like he wanted to. (Now he says it was because he was sure
he had no chance and that I would break his heart, which I guess is an acceptable answer.)

So, remembering what I'd learned at my "Marriage Prep" class at BYU, I took matters into my own hands. (This professor, Dr. Barlow, actually gave us assignments to ask people out. He didn't like girls sitting around "waiting" for stuff to happen.) So I asked Samuel if he wanted to go out with some people from Shriners, to a sandbar. You have to boat out to it, and it's basically a mini-island of sand a few miles off the shore. Depending on the tide, it's usually covered by a few inches or a few feet of water. It's a fun party place. Well, he agreed. I actually have a picture of this momentous first date,

and you can see how different he looked when I first met him, all scruffy with his curly hair all long(and for some reason I just loved it!) Anyway, it took a few hours for me to break down Samuel's defenses, but persistence is the key!! He decided to extend our date by taking me to Star Wars III which had just come out. That was the end of his resolve, we were together almost every day after that and engaged three months later.

Well, this memorial day we got a special treat. A friend of ours is learning to fly helicopters, he's actually almost done and just needs more flight hours. He was able to take us out on a helicopter ride so we could see our island, and it was amazing. (I've been on one other helicopter ride in Kauai, but it was really special to see our own island-home from the air.) So, I hope you enjoy the pictures of Oahu.

28 Weeks and a New Niece

Aloha friends, I've hit 28 weeks, so we took another picture. One counter says I'm 27 weeks and another says 28, so I'm going with 28, since this baby seems to be further along than we thought. She's having regular dance parties at 11 p.m. every night- I'm glad she's having such a good time in there. I, for one, am not used to my growing belly, and I keep scraping it on things! By the way, can someone tell me if I'm carrying high or low? Some stranger said I was "low" yesterday, but I can't tell. I think I'm carrying straight out in front, with this short torso of mine, where else can she go?? :)

Also, I wanted to say congrats to my sister Krystal on a great delivery of my newest niece, Kyla Collette Trapnell, out in Florida. She weighed 7 pounds 2 ounces. Pictures are on Tara's blog. We're glad our baby will have a cousin so close in age. Well, Happy Memorial Day, yay for long weekends, hope everyone has a great time.

Oh good, it really is a girl!

And we got pictures to prove it this time!! We got to do a third ultrasound so the tech could get a good look at the baby's heart. Someone told me to drink a coke or something to have an "awake" baby, so I thought it would be "better" for the baby if I drank this vitamin-packed "energy drink" with anti-oxidants and vitamins (instead of caffeine) that is supposed to be sooo good for you and all natural, you know, to make sure the baby didn't sleep through the ultrasound like last time. But....it was on an empty stomach. And about 30 minutes into the ultrasound I got major cold sweats and came SO close to throwing up. I had to roll over and Samuel was like, blowing on my face cause I was ready to toss!! Embarrassing. But funny too. My bad. (Baby was pretty wiggly, but still, stupid of me!)

Anyway, I've been looking forward to this day for awhile, I love peeking in on my baby. We saw her yawn and suck on her hand, and put her hand under her chin like she was propping it up, it was just so fun. We got a picture of her little girl parts, but I won't put that one up. It was just nice to get the confirmation. Our tech was super nice and took all these extra pictures for us. I know all babies pretty much look the same at this point, but oh well!!! We're too excited to keep them to ourselves. Here's a nice profile shot: (does she have my nose? j/k)

The tech said they were keeping my due date the same, but that August 17th might be a more accurate date (instead of the 26th.) She ALSO said the baby's leg bones are extra long, and our baby might be really tall. Weird!! I never thought my baby might grow up to be taller than me! She does have a tall daddy...anyway, here's a cute little foot shot

and a "hair" shot- the tech thought she had unusally long hair too, which is kind of funny to me too. Those white lines are her (long?) hair on the back of her head.

Anyway, thanks again everyone for all the great advice, seriously, you guys are like a WEALTH of information!!!!

While I'm on the Subject...

Wow, I'm surrounded by great advice and I love it!! I guess there are some benefits to waiting until age 26 to have a baby! So, I was talking with some friends today that are throwing me a baby shower. They wanted to know what I wanted...and I thought I better run to the blog for help. What kinds of things (besides clothes) should I ask for from my friends at the shower?

In your experience, what things are you sooo glad you had, or the things you will make sure to have the next time? Is there a certain brand/kind of nipples that were great? Certain kind of carseat? (I was thinking Graco Snugride). Also, we don't have a rocking chair/glider/recliner. Should we get one?

I (like Jaesi) love craigslist, and I've already started gathering some stuff. Also, some friends have generously just given us some great things. So, on that note, here's what we already have:

Jeep Jogger Stroller
Bjorn Baby carrier
Electric breast pump (one-sided...should I borrow my sister's double sided?)
Baby Tub
Bouncy Chair
Diaper Genie
Nursing/Boppy pillow

So hook me up with your ideas, I'll be so grateful. :)

Crib or Pack-n-play?

Hi girls, I need some advice. A friend of ours is moving, and they offered to give us some baby stuff (nice!). They have a full sized crib and also a pack-n-play. Their 2 year old has been sleeping in the crib and their 8 month old in the pack-n-play, since he was born. So, my question is, if I had to choose one, which should I choose?

Keep in mind: Our apartment is a small one-bedroom, so the baby will either be sleeping in our room or the living room. The pack-n-play would obviously fit better, but the baby will outgrow it by 30 lbs. But I don't have a bassinette or anything, so do any of you have experience putting a newborn in a crib?

Also: We aren't sure how long we'll be living here, we could be leaving in a few months, or maybe staying for a few years. So I can't base my choice on that.

All your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!! She doesn't really get to read this much, but Happy Birthday anyway.

Happy Mothers Day to all of you!

Just wanted to say that I hope you all had a wonderful mother's day, I know you girls are wonderful mothers, and I just wanted to say thanks for the advice in helping me get ready to be one. You guys are great. Also, thanks to Samuel for making the day so special, and for making me the best barbeque ribs EVER!! Love ya!

Spider Bites!

So, before I put up a picture of my spider bites, I have to say two things: 1. I live in Hawaii, but I might as well live in Minnesota with Emma because I'm just as white as she is. (No offense Emma darling, it was the first cold place I thought of.) My first year in Hawaii I laid out religiously, loving my year-round tan. Then, quite suddenly, about a year ago, I started noticing the brown sun-spots and freckles popping up on my face and hands. Some of them were pretty big, and finally I saw the light and stopped toasting my skin all the time. I am now a huge fan of sunscreen and I am trying hard to find products to fade all the damage, but it's taking forever. So, I don't really lay out anymore, and you will notice when you see how white my legs are.
2. This is mostly for my sister, Krystal, in Florida. Don't let Allie (my niece) see this picture or she'll start having spider nightmares again!! (Poor girl actually found a huge spider in a bedroom at her house.)

So, the story, Sunday we had Stake conference, which meant we were done by noon. Nice! What did we do with our lovely sabbath? Took a huge nap of course! I took a shower before bed, and finally noticed the lovely red bites all over my legs. There's about 20 on one leg and 25 on the other (mean spider!). I never felt a thing. I'm not sure if it happened during the nap (spider stuck in the covers?) or later, but now it's Tuesday evening, and the bites are changing a bit...I don't want to go into too much detail, but there's pus involved. They don't itch though, they just hurt a bit. Wow...my legs look oddly disproportioned. Must be the camera angle. Still though, makes me wonder, why am I putting this on my blog again?

Well, that's my fun story of the day, to go along with the cockroach stories from last week!
